perfect, (What's this?) I got this so I don't have to melt butter in the microwave anymore. I was tired of it always popping and making a mess. Now I warm it over the stove in this. The best part, is the heat retention.... you don't have to worry about it cooling down.
Perfect for Indian cooking. And for cooking one egg., I own lots of Lodge items, but won't bore you with the merits of using cast iron - especially since I don't think a pot of this size really demonstrates all the strengths of cast iron cookware.
I purchased this little guy for 1 main reason and I have not been disappointed. I cook a lot of Indian dishes - things like dal and meat/veg curries. A common technique in Indian cooking is to heat some fat in a little pot and quickly add spices, chilies, ginger, garlic, etc. for a minute or so. Then you dump the mix into another pot which has cooked the main ingredient - things like lentils, beans, etc. The technique is called "tarka" and is an easy way to add a lot of flavor to a dish. This little pot is the perfect size for this - not too big, not too small.
I have since discovered another use for the pot. It is perfect for cooking one egg! You need very little water to poach and the small size keeps the egg compact. It's great for frying too since the egg doesn't stick to the properly seasoned cast iron.
The only problem I have with the pot is that the bottom diameter is a bit too small. I have a hard time keeping it stable on my gas burners. I fix that problem by placing a small cast iron trivet between the pot and the burner.
Tipped over with butter, The pot is not stable on top of my stove. I was making clarified butter when it tipped over and everything burst into flames. I had to return it.
Great!, (What's this?) This is a wonderful little pot for butter, syrup, leftover chile, you name it.
Love it., (What's this?)
14-oz pot, (What's this?)
Awesome, (What's this?) I dug up an old forge from 130 years ago, from a barn, when my grandpa's grandpa was a blacksmith, fixed the forge and used this product to melt metals into pools if liquid.
Tough Stuff.
Comp0112, (What's this?) A lot of Lodge was used, and it looked for the type to melt butter etc.It is Good. I want to arrange the oven of this size to the type that a big fish wholly enters.
Nice little pot, (What's this?) First off, let me say that I wouldn't recommend this pot for anyone with an electric stove unless it's induction heating (which is what i use and it works great).
The base is simply too narrow to be of any use to someone with anything other than gas or plain old fire.. and baking (can you say the best French onion soup ever?
One more simple but crucial part to take note of is the height. It's short enough to make stirring of any kind a more delicate process, which even when carefully demonstrated risks spilling.
Otherwise it works great, perfect for baking or making sauces and soups for one.
It's a very specific design: perfect for a few tasks but certainly not a crowd pleaser.
Great for grilling, (What's this?) I bought this pot for heating up barbecue sauce for grilling. I set my small stove burner on a notch or two below medium, squirt in about 10 ounces of Famous Dave's traditional sauce and let it heat while the chicken is on the barbecue. This little pot is great because you can keep it next to the grill and it stays warm for a long time, keeping the sauce warm to bast onto the chicken. It's also great to melt a few sticks of clarified butter. The 2 pour spouts are handy and increase the usefulness of this pot. This pot could last a few hundred years if washed correctly and not abused. Lodge Logic Pre-Seasoned Cast-Iron 14-Ounce Melting Pot.
